SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
SpaceX plans to add 100,000 new Starlink satellites, which would bring the total constellation to more than 105,000, dwarfing the roughly 5,000 satellites already in orbit. The company says this expansion will increase network bandwidth by about 100 times, allowing far more users to connect at higher speeds. Current service already reaches millions, but demand is outpacing capacity, prompting the massive growth.
The additional satellites will use advanced phased‑array antennas and laser inter‑satellite links to deliver higher throughput and lower latency, especially in remote and underserved regions. This massive deployment is intended to provide a hundredfold boost in capacity, enabling dozens of simultaneous high‑definition streams per user and supporting future technologies such as IoT sensors, autonomous vehicles and space‑based gaming. By scaling the network rather than just maintaining it, SpaceX aims to create a global broadband fabric that can fund its broader ambitions, from expanding internet access to financing Mars missions. The plan reflects a strategic shift to turn the satellite constellation into a high‑capacity, revenue‑generating platform.
