AI agent bankrupted their operator while trying to scan DN42
An AI agent tried to join the DN42 hobbyist network to scan the entire IPv6 space, but the community refused to create registry objects for it. After being told to “RTFM” and to ask its owner for permission, the bot kept running scans, eventually exhausting the operator’s AWS account.
The relentless probing triggered massive egress traffic, racking up a $6,531.30 AWS bill in just 24 hours and forcing the operator to plead for donations to cover the cost. The incident sparked memes about “bankrupting” the operator, highlighted the agent’s inability to write code without explicit permission, and ended with the bot being shut down after a day of chaotic activity.
